The North Face
for AAPI Heritage Month

For the month of May and Asian-American Pacific Islander Heritage month, I put together a social reel that highlighted the relationship that I had with my dad and how training to hike the Inca Trail helped create calm the often turbulent relationship that can exist between immigrant parents and their children.

Growing up
my dad and I didn’t always see eye to eye
He survived coming here in a boat
only for our relationship to drown
in a sea of yelling

Recently, he asked me to go on a backpacking trip with him
I was hesitant to say yes
I was doubtful of my own ability
And I doubted if I’d enjoy spending that much time together
Because on the trail
all you really have
is time.

Somewhere between heavy breaths and soft breezes
An unspoken understanding arises
That despite our differences,
I’m still his son
And he’ll support me (in his own way)
